Most of us who live in Breckenridge are pretty big fans of some of the more rugged outdoor activities – we love to ski, mountain bike, climb, you name it. So it may come as a surprise that a town that is all about playing hard on the mountain also offers some amazing and downright luxurious spa experiences.
Maybe you’ve got friends coming into town and a great massage is just the thing that will make their vacation complete; or you and your girlfriends have decided to treat yourself to an afternoon of spa treatments (and maybe a cocktail or two!); or, as an athlete, you realize that a deep tissue sports massage is more than a luxury, it can help prevent injury and even improve performance.
Here are five local spas that include my favorites as well as a suggestion or two from friends who take their pampering seriously.
BLUE SAGE SPA.
I love to bring friends from out of town to Blue Sage. If it’s their first encounter with high altitude, they can begin their spa experience with an oxygen treatment to relieve headaches and tiredness. Then they’ll probably want to move on to a massage with a custom mix of essential oils – or even spend an afternoon enjoying a more extensive package of beauty treatments. And don’t forget the guys! On my last trip to the Spa, the guest before me was checking in with her boyfriend, who was there to enjoy a Gentleman’s Facial. Blue Sage definitely offers one of the more extensive lists of pampering massages and beauty treatments, and it can accommodate groups as well.

BRECKENRIDGE MOUNTAIN MASSAGE.
A hidden gem, this small studio specializes in therapeutic massage, and is where athletes come to get worked over after a day on the mountains. It is also the most reasonably priced studio in town, which makes it one of my favorites – and a favorite among locals who want massage to be part of their regular health maintenance routine. If you or a loved one is suffering from a more serious health issue, this studio has a naturopathic doctor on staff as well as therapists who are trained in oncology massage. A next-day check in call from your therapist is one of the nice touches that give this studio a very warm, personal feeling.

REFRESH AT THE GRAND TIMBER LODGE.
Searching for a resort experience where you and your girlfriends can get your nails done, enjoy a massage, and then spend the afternoon drinking cocktails by the pool? Search no more! Refresh is all about the glamour and that little bit of over-the-top indulgence. Where else in Breck can you AND your feet enjoy a martini at the same time? Luxuriate in a Watermelon Vodka-tini Pedicure, while your Refresh beautician serves you up a martini from the bar. When calling to make an appointment, inquire about specials, as during the summer and fall a changing menu of weekly specials is on offer.

Sol Impressions is a small spa right in downtown that offers massage as well as a range of beauty treatments. The owners of the studio purchase most of their products from Tibet, and many of the treatments – such as the Tibetan Massage – reflect an Asian sensibility towards massage, with the use of pressure points and energy work. Book my favorite room, the red “Tibetan Room”: it is decorated with colorful prayer flags and the warm, mellow lighting and soothing voice of your therapist will encourage you to take a deep exhale …. ahhhhh…. and relax!

THE SPA AT BRECKENRIDGE.
I have to confess that the mountains feel very far away when I walk into this sexy, boutique-style spa with its velvety red walls, striking art collection, and subdued lighting. The menu of treatments includes the most luxurious versions of favorite services: the spa facial, hand and foot massage, and mountain recovery massage, for example. Services are a little on the pricey side, but the extra pampering and amenities make it so worth it! Use of the resort steam room, hot tubs and heated pool included. The Spa at Breckenridge is located inside the Blue Sky Breckenridge Resort at the foot of the Snowflake Chair lift. In the winter, you can ski right off the slope and into the spa.
