Spring skiing at the base of Peak 8.

Calling all skiers, riders and snow enthusiasts…..somewhere there is a swan getting ready to sing about this ski season.  There’s an old myth that swans used to sing before they passed into avian heaven, and Sunday will mark the end of the 2011-2012 ski season at Breckenridge Ski Resort.  Breckenridge Ski Resort graciously stayed open for two additional weekends as part of its 50th Birthday celebration.  This Friday, Saturday and Sunday is your last chance to get some more turns in before next season.

If you haven’t traditionally skied this late into April, here are a few of my favorite reasons to enjoy spring skiing:

You never know what you'll see this time of year!

The Costumes:

Yep, that’s right; there are a lot of people wearing costumes while skiing this time of year.  Some of my favorites are a variety of cartoon animals and super heroes with capes.   Interestingly enough, some of my male friends seem to be more partial to perusing the variety of bikinis on display in the warm spring weather.  Hmm…..well, whatever entertains you more; there is a good chance of seeing it this time of year, coming down the mountain, and all with a certain grace and style!

The Scenery:

There’s a reason Barbara Streisand sang “On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever” – she obviously had visited Breckenridge.  Ok, maybe it’s not true she visited Breckenridge, but the song is true, nonetheless. You can see Lake Dillon from Breckenridge, and you can also see across to Keystone and Arapahoe Basin.  The scenery is simply fantastic……..and I’m not talking about the costumes on this one.

The Skiing:

Bring your suntan lotion and a smile!

Sure, powder is still fantastic, but there is something to be said for gliding down the mountain while easily making turns through soft snow like slicing through butter.  Go early and check it out, you won’t be sorry you did.  And after you’re done skiing, enjoy sitting on a deck outside in the sun for après ski.  Ahhh, it’s heavenly!

So, that’s it.  Grab your skis, grab some sun tan lotion, and head to the slopes for one last ski weekend.  And if you need last minute lodging options, check out http://www.gobreck.com/last-minute-lodging for last minute lodging specials.  You won’t be sorry you did!
