Each year, the Town of Breckenridge pays homage to the mythical Norse god of snow, Ullr. During the annual week-long “Ullr-Fest”, locals and visitors alike partake in a variety of fun and whacky events, all designed to entice Ullr to reward the Town with a blanket of powdery soft snow. The events throughout the week include games, activities, ice skating, a bonfire and perhaps the most entertaining of all: the Ullr Parade.
The Ullr Parade is a long running-tradition, typically always held on the Thursday evening of Ullr Fest. While Macy’s may have the most well-known parade in the country, Breckenridge’s Ullr Parade may be the most enthusiastic and home-spun parade in the country. All you need to have in order to enter the Ullr Parade is: enthusiasm for winter and snow.
And enthusiasm there was once again this year! From dog sleds, to living room couch sleds, there were floats pulling all kinds of sleds down Main Street. There were also floats pulling skiers and riders, who at times could barely stay on their feet. Come to think of it, there were floats pulling quite a few things down Main Street! You see, the Ullr Parade is not exactly known for being proper; if anything, it’s known for being a bit, uhm, improper. But, all in the name of good fun that is.
And fun there was! This year’s parade featured the annual Ullr King and Queen, along with a variety of Norse attired locals. Ullr’s Bar actually made the procession down Main Street, as did a variety of other local business entries. One of the more popular floats was “We Look Good for our Age” by Vail Resort’s Breck Street Team. The float, which took second place, celebrated Breckenridge Ski Resort’s 50th Birthday. Besides having a two-story birthday cake with candles on the float, they actually made and sprayed snow out into the street! (No doubt, this was just in case Ullr needed a hint?)
And, drum roll, puhleese, the winning float was none other than “2012: Year of the Snow Dragon”, by Breckenridge Grand Vacations. The float was certainly grand with a larger-than-life, wintery “snow” dragon parading down Main Street, in honor the Chinese New Year which welcomes in the year of the Dragon in a few weeks.
So make plans now to attend next year’s Ullr activities in Breckenridge. But, if you don’t want – or can’t wait – that long to have some fun in the snow, then consider visiting Breckenridge for Mardi Gras. From Feb. 18-21, 2012, Breckenridge will celebrate Mardi Gras in style, with yet another parade on Tuesday, Feb. 21st. For more information on Mardi Gras and lodging options, visit www.gobreck.com. So mark your calendars now, and head up to Breck for another celebration. You’ll be sorry if you don’t!
