If you look at the Quick Facts section of Conrad Anker’s bio on The North Face’s website, you’ll read “Weakness: Sushi,” “Nickname: Radster,” and “Most Recent Epic: Meru.” From the Glossary of Climbing Terms page in Wikipedia: “Epic: An ordinary climb rendered difficult by a dangerous combination of weather, injuries, darkness, lack of preparedness or other adverse factors.” I don’t know if India’s Mount Meru could be considered an ordinary climb by anyone other than Conrad and his peers, but you can judge it for yourself on Saturday, October 12.
The Impossible Climb.
Conrad Anker will be delivering a presentation about the first successful summit of India’s Mount Meru, via the vertical Shark’s Fin route.
From The North Face’s website:
In October 2011, Conrad, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk summited one of the last great unclimbed features of the Himalayas by topping out on the Shark’s Fin route on the northwest face of 20,700-foot Meru in the Garhwal Himalaya. In the game of high-altitude, big-wall mountaineering, the previously unclimbed route represents one of the world’s ultimate mountaineering tests, with the lower third a classic alpine snow-and-ice route, the middle a mix of ice and rock, and the final section an extremely difficult, overhanging headwall. The Shark’s Fin has drawn many of the world’s top alpinists over the past 30 years, none of them able to finish the route.
Following the presentation, there will be a question-and-answer, and book and poster signing session.
The presentation will take place at the Breckenridge Riverwalk Center at 150 West Adams, Breckenridge, CO 80424, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The VIP meet and greet reception will take place prior to the main event at The North Face Breckenridge Store, located at 322 South Main Street at 5:30PM. It’ll include premium seating, wine and beer, and hors d’oeuvres from The Briar Rose restaurant. All proceeds from the VIP reception will go to the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC).
VIP Meet & Greet tickets are $20, and guaranteed seating tickets are available for $8.
