Remember when you were a kid and you played outside in the snow with your friends? And then your Mom read you those great bedtime stories, like “The Little Engine That Could,” which pulled a train over a high mountaintop, just by saying “I think I can, I think I can…”? Well, get ready to be a kid again! You can play in the snow and all you have to do is say, “I think I can, I think I can” and enter the Snowflake Challenge. And you might even win money in the process!

The Snowflake Challenge is a snow sculpting competition for snow enthusiasts who have always wanted to participate in a snow sculpting competition, albeit on a smaller scale than the International Snow Sculpting Championships.

It’s really a “locals’” competition, with folks from all over Summit County participating. The sculptures are created in a variety of locations in the heart of Breckenridge.

And the best part? There really are no rules — you can be as creative as you want. You can have a team of three people, or a team of 20 people, or just a team of you and your imaginary friends. You gather the snow you want to use for your sculpture, and you can use props, color, lights — pretty much anything you can think of as part of your sculpture, with only one exception: no power tools. So leave your chainsaws at home and bring your creativity – and perhaps the kitchen sink.

Breckenridge Associates and the Breckenridge Resort Chamber have teamed up to make this event easy to enter and to provide CASH PRIZES. According to Rob Neyland of Breckenridge Associates, most of the teams that enter have never done snow sculpting before. (Oops, you can’t use that excuse now!)

A few of his personal favorites from the past? How about the sculpture of Ma and Pa sitting on the couch watching a flat screen TV? Now that’s impressive already — but get this: The TV actually played a video of the team making the sculpture! And last year, a group of snowcat operators created a sculpture of a fireplace with a Christmas tree and presents. Turns out that team entered with the hope of winning and giving the prize money to an injured co-worker, which is exactly what they did – how cool is that?

Perhaps all you’ve done in the past is created a snow family in the yard — no problem. Simply say, “I think I can” and let the magic happen (well, you’ll have to work hard, just like the Little Engine did, but you may be surprised what you come up with).

Get your team together and enter now, as the sculpting takes place from March 4-9, with judging at 3: p.m. on March 9. To register, go to www.brecksnowflakechallenge.com, or call (970) 453-2200, or stop by Breckenridge Associates (located on Main Street between Starbucks and Bubba Gumps) and register by Monday, March 3.

For rules, registration forms, liability forms, helpful tips or a poster, click here. Only sculptures at designated sites will be judged, which is no problem as they’ve already scoped out great locations on Main Street and around town that are just waiting for your sculpture to spring to life!
