Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Breckenridge brings all the thrill of a big city party with the laid back vibe of a ski town. Whether you’re looking for a big get-together with friends, a mellow evening watching the ball drop on television, or a bar crawl from one end of town to the other, you’re sure to find the perfect New Year’s Eve in Breckenridge. No matter how you choose to spend your evening, it’s important to make sure you are taking a few safety precautions so that everyone enjoys themselves. Here are three tips for a safe Breckenridge New Year’s Eve.

1. Eat plenty of food and drink plenty of water

Champagne may be the beverage of choice on New Year’s Eve, but be sure to drink plenty of water, as well.

Breckenridge is located at 9,600 feet of elevation, so if you’re drinking, you’ll feel the effects of alcohol more quickly. It’s a good idea to take a few preventative measures so you can enjoy the night without getting out of control.

If you’re going to a party, there may or may not be snacks or food to eat. Plus, it can be easy to forget to eat once you have a cocktail in hand. Plan on eating at least a light meal before you leave the house. Or, consider a hearty dinner at one of Breckenridge’s many top-notch restaurants before you head to the party.

In addition to eating, plan on drinking plenty of water, both during the day and throughout the evening. It’ll help to slow you down and you might even feel a bit better the next morning.

2. Put together a plan for the entire evening

Main Street Breckenridge has a variety of restaurants and bars to ring in the New Year.

Before you leave the house or hotel room for a festive evening, make sure you have a plan in place and everyone in your group knows what it is. Once you’re out on the town, it’s easy to get separated, so you’ll want to be ready to meet at the next stop or at an appointed time.

Be sure to also swap phone numbers with everyone in the group so that if someone doesn’t show up you can check in to make sure they’re alright. Especially if you are visiting from out of town, you don’t want anyone to get lost and have trouble getting back to the hotel room on a cold January morning. A straightforward plan and plenty of communication will ensure everyone is safe at the end of the evening.

3. Whatever you do, don’t drive

Downtown Breck is easy to navigate on foot or through the free local bus system.

If you’re drinking, don’t drive. And if you’re driving, don’t drink … at all. Plan in advance. Many Breckenridge hotels and condos are located within easy walking distance of Main Street, so you’ll never have to worry about how you’re going to get home at the end of the night.

If you’re further from downtown, take advantage of the local bus system, Breck Freeride, which provides free transportation around Breckenridge until 11:45 p.m. nightly and on New Year’s Eve will offer special extended service until 2 a.m. when local bars close. Want to stay out later than 2? Consider hiring a private vehicle with a professional driver to transport your group. Services like Peak 1 Express can be booked on a hourly basis until everyone is home safe.

Whether you’re planning a night on the town or a night in with friends, be sure to take the necessary precautions so that everyone in your party has a fun, memorable, and safe Breckenridge New Year’s Eve.
